HACKATHON: Tech & Media Solutions to Reduce Sexually Transmitted Infections 6/22/23-6/23/23

By National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

Join them Thursday, June 22 to Friday, June 23, 2023 from 11:00AM to 4:30PM at the Beckman Center of the National Academies, 100 Academy Wy, Irvine, CA 92617.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a longstanding problem in the United States, with persistently high, increasing, and now record-level rates of reported cases. One important area to explore to prevent and control STIs is technology and new media. Much has changed in the technology and media landscape in the past two decades that has had an impact on STI acquisition, prevention, screening, and treatment. Technological tools, including artificial intelligence (AI), highly immersive media, and cryptographic data transfer methods/blockchain apps, are rapidly changing STI epidemiology and intervention efforts.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (National Academies), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), will host a hackathon to generate innovative solutions to address the increase in cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States.

The event is open to all, including academia, philanthropy, private industry, students, and early to late career professionals. The winning teams will receive cash prizes, mentorship, and a publication opportunity.

Hackathon Winners will have their winning solutions featured on the event website and/or promoted on NAM and other National Academies social media accounts. First and second place Hackathon Winners in each track will have the opportunity to receive a grant to continue work on their proposed solution. $60K in funds to be awarded! Each first place Hackathon winning team will be eligible for a grant in the amount of $20,000, and each second place Hackathon winning team will be eligible for a grant of $5000. In addition, two YouTube Health Innovation Prizes will be awarded ($5000 each).
