Chapman University Announces New Social Entrepreneurship Class
ORANGE, CA – The Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics, an associated educational program of Chapman University’s Argyros School of Business and Economics, is aggressively expanding the number of innovative tactical courses the Center offers with the introduction of the Social Entrepreneurship class for Fall 2023.
Social Entrepreneurship, designated ENTR 495 within the University catalog, is focused on providing students with an understanding of the fundamentals of starting a for-profit business model that strives to make a positive impact on social issues or the environment. Topics included will be identifying social problems, theories of change, delivering solutions and measuring impact. Students will build a comprehensive business plan for a social enterprise throughout the semester.
“This is a true hands-on program, which engages students to both commit to social change at some level and develop an enterprise that will help do so while making a profit,” declared Nicolle Halbur, who will serve as the course’s professor this fall. Halbur specializes in building both for-profit and non-profit organizations and created a company that financially assisted cancer patients who were undergoing treatment, enabling them to pay their household bills.
“I am confident there are many students at Chapman and within our Argyros Business School who want to pursue an entrepreneurial role in developing businesses that can help bring about social or environmental change,” Halbur added. “The next founder of a company like TOMS or Warby Parker will want to take this class.”
The Leatherby Center is accelerating entrepreneurial success through research, education and collaboration.
“My predecessor, Mario Leone, did a great job of expanding the entrepreneurship curriculum, and we plan to expand upon that foundation. The research shows that 2/3rds of Gen Z want to have a positive impact on the world through their careers. The Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship is uniquely poised to provide both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in starting social ventures.” stated Dr. Cynthia West, the newly appointed Director of the Leatherby Center and Clinical Associate Professor of Argyros Business School.
