UCI Beall Applied Innovation brings campus-based inventions and entrepreneurship together with Orange County's vibrant business community to support job creation and economic growth.
To make this happen, UCI Beall Applied Innovation facilitates connections between UCI and industry, including: entrepreneurs seeking access to university inventions and talent, large corporations looking to tap the school’s research capabilities, and investors wanting to financially support promising new companies.
Additionally, UCI Beall Applied Innovation is working to cultivate an “innovation district” in the heart of Orange County, producing more start-ups, more scale-ups, and, ultimately, a world-class entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Under UCI Beall Applied Innovation, the Research Translation Group (RTG) fosters the evolution of UCI’s fundamental research into products with real-world impact. RTG provides a complete suite of capabilities, including processing invention disclosures, patenting innovation, and connecting industry partners with relevant opportunities. The Invention Transfer Group (ITG) is a significant component of RTG, tasked with helping university faculty, physicians and researchers understand and navigate the translation of their discoveries.
The Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and Executive Director provides executive level leadership for the UCI Beall Applied Innovation (BAI) organization established by UCI as a campus-wide resource reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.
The position is broad based, having responsibilities in several areas critical to the future success of the campus. The core areas of responsibility are campus entrepreneurial community/corporate engagement, intellectual property stewardship, and outreach/external relations connected to entrepreneurship and industry collaboration. Operational responsibilities of the CIO include oversight of a wide range of services provided by the BAI Research Translation Group, including invention disclosures, provisional patents, patent prosecution, negotiating and licensing of UCI intellectual property, and corporate collaboration. The CIO oversees the negotiation and coordination of Industry Sponsored Research grants and contracts.
